“What makes you so certain that she’ll ask?”

Shelby reached for a water bottle. “Because she hasn’t yet, which means she’s saving it for a special occasion.”

Bastien slumped back against his seat. “Look, I’ll be the first to admit that Sloan isn’t exactly the most pleasant person to interact with. But you think you might be just the tiniest bit paranoid?”

She eyed him from behind her chic frames. “This from the guy who assembles entire files on people who so much as deliver a pizza to his place.”

Fair point.

“I’m telling you, she’s been entirely too solicitous lately,” Shelby said. “She’s planning something for this show. I just know it.”

Bastien perused the list once again. “For this, you felt the need to pick me up from the airport?”

Shelby cleared her throat, worrying the hem of her jacket. “Actually, no.”

He waited, bracing himself for additional revelations.

“I was also wondering if you’d like to have sex with me again while you’re in town.”

It was a damn good thing he hadn’t been swallowing liquid when she asked this, or it might have ended up showering the smoked glass shield between them and the driver. Soundproof, he guessed, judging by some of the stories she’d told him about her father’s suspicious nature.

“As we’ve established, I’m terrible at the whole seduction thing,” she continued when he didn’t answer, “and this way we can at least discuss our terms and make sure everything is clear up front. I enjoyed it, and you seemed to enjoy it, so provided your relationship status hasn’t changed—”

“I ‘seemed’ to enjoy it?” he repeated, incredulous.

Shelby blinked rapidly. If she had rehearsed this conversation, and he suspected that she had, it wasn’t going the way she had planned. “It’s also an excellent tension release, which you seem to be experiencing plenty of at the moment.” Her eyes flicked to his white-knuckle grip on the door handle.

“I’m being propositioned in broad daylight in the back of a car that costs more than my entire house. Forgive me if I seem a little taken aback.”

Her face turned a pink so vibrant that he was surprised her glasses didn’t fog. “I’m sorry if I’ve made this awkward. There’s no pressure either way. If you don’t want to—”

“Of course, I want to,” he answered without thinking. And he did. For years, he’d lived without physical contact of that nature, and having been roused from hibernation, his libido had proven to be much like Ben. Prowling around with claws and teeth, demanding satiation. “But I think there are some factors you may not have considered.”

“Such as?”

“Your father.”

“What I do with my body is none of his business. And, anyway, he doesn’t need to know.”

Something about the idea of being her dirty little secret didn’t sit comfortably with him. Still, he found this new streak of independence encouraging.

“You say that now. But if he or Sloan picks up on something, that is a whole different ball game.”

“What is there to pick up on?” she asked.

“There’s a level of comfort with each other’s bodies that’s noticeable between people who are intimately involved.
